Minutes 1714 – 1747

At our monthly meeting held at Gwynedd, 31st day of
ye 3rd month, 1726.
Firstly – The Friends
appointed to visit families at Swamp * of * gave in account of
their service each was mainly comfortable.
Secondly – The
Friends appointed last meeting to ye assistance of Evan Thomas
account they have accordingly done it and have nothing to object
to his intentions.
Thirdly –
Fourthly – Henry
Pastorus proposed for a certificate to Abington Monthly Meeting.
Casper Foulk and Owen Evans are appointed to draw one by next
meeting.
Fifthly – A motion
being made about settling a meeting for ye more general
encouragement of ye youth of others which after some discourse
was referred to next meeting.
At our monthly meeting held at Gwynedd, the 25th day
of ye 7th month, 1733.
Firstly – The Friends
appointed last meeting report ye marriage of Abram Road was
accomplished according to order.
Secondly – Mordecai Yarnal and Catharine Meredith declared their
intentions of marriage with each other ye second time. His
certificate from Goshen Monthly Meeting being read gave a good
account of his clearance and conversation. They are left to
their liberty to consummate their intentions. David Harry and
William Roberts are appointed to see it orderly accomplished.
Third – Jonathan
Rumford being present and agrees it be referred to the hearing
of Evan Evans the Fourth, Owen Evans, Robert Jones, Ellis
Robert, John Evans, John Jones, and Job Pugh who are desired to
use their utmost endeavor to put a final end to it.
Fourth – As to the
proposal of * Friend for a General Meeting it is granted that a
meeting be held ye second first day in ye third, sixth, ninth
and twelfth months to begin ye ninth month next.
Fifth – With respect
to ye Swamp and Plymouth Friends proposing for a youths meeting,
it is agreed that one be held at each place once a year when
they may judge most suitable.
Sixth – The Swamp
Friends proposed ye John
Adamson’s wife is dead, and having a young child to nurse,
being unable to help it, for want of assistance. It is opened to
further consideration.
At our monthly
meeting held at Gwynedd the 30th of ye 8th
month, 1733.
Firstly – The Friends
appointed to attend the marriage of Mordecai Yarnal report it
was orderly accomplished.
Secondly – The Friends appointed on John Rumford’s affair report
the charges and proof alleged by ye said John and Joseph
Williams appeared to them to be too frivolous to make any
differences. They are advised to drop it and mutually forgive
each other, but Friends are not yet satisfied with his public
opposition. Friends in time of prayer, this meeting in
consideration heard with ye said John, in hopes he may come to
more compliance.
Third – For fixing ye
time of youths meeting at Plymouth and Swamp Owen Evans, Thomas
Foulk, John Jones, David Harry, William Nixon, and John Edwards
are appointed to meet at Plymouth for a General Meeting in order
to establish a suitable time to hold ye said meeting.
Fourth – Catharine
Wood brought in a paper condemning her proceedings in marriage
contrary to ye discipline of Friends which was read and received
upon.
Fifth – Forty
shillings is required to ye relief of John Adamson. Each
Preparative (meeting) is desired to bring in their consideration
by next meeting.
Sixth – John Griffith
provided for himself and wife a certificate from Goshen Monthly
Meeting which was read but not received because their
circumstances appear to be very low and in need. This meeting is
already burdened with the charge. John Jones and Owen Evans are
desired to write to that and therein acquaint them with ye
reasons of our refusal.
Seventh – Our Friends
of Swamp acquaints us
that Joseph Samuel hath proceeded in marrying contrary to the
order of Friends and also been unclean with her, that is, his
wife. Edward Robert and William Nixon are desired to speak with
him.
Eighth - Joseph Boon
produced a paper of condemnation for producing in marriage
contrary to our order and committing fornication with her, that
is, his wife. So, it was read and received upon trial.
Ninth - George Lewis,
Thomas Ellis, Joseph Jones, Joshua Dickinson, and Owen Evans are
appointed to attend the service of next quarterly meeting at
Philadelphia.
At our monthly
meeting held at Gwynedd, the 27th day of ye 9th
month, 1733
Firstly - Our Friend,
Andres Cramer, having returned from his visit to Holland,
produced three confirmations; one from Holland, another from
Ireland, and one from London, all which were read and received.
He also proposed for a certificate to Boughton. John Jacobs and
Robert Jones are appointed to devote a few lines for him by next
meeting.
Second - The Friends
appointed report they first authorized meeting to be held at
Plymouth ye first fifth day in ye Eleventh Month yearly. And for
ye Swamp, the first fourth day in ye Sixth Month, and this
meeting approves of it.
Third - The money being brought as directed last meeting is
ordered to be paid for nursing John Adamson's child.
Fourth - The Friends
appointed to speak with Joseph Samuel brought no satisfactory
account. Therefore, the meeting being under a necessity to
testify again. John Jones, John Evans, and Owen Evans are
appointed to draw a testimony against him by next meeting.
Fifth - It is again
exhibited to this meeting the scandalous conduct of John Jones
occasioned by excessive drinking and Friends have long labored
in vain. To a necessity is upon us to testify against him. John
Jones and Robert Jones are appointed to draw a paper against him
by next meeting. John Hammer and William Trotter are inclined to
speak with him first, which is approved of.
At our meeting held at Gwynedd ye 30th day of the
first month, 1736.
First - John Robert
and Jane Hank declared their intentions of marriage with each
other ye first time. George Lewis and William Williams are
appointed to enquire into his clearance and report at next
meeting.
Second - Samuel Davies and Jane Rees declared their intentions
of marriage ye first time. John Hammer and William Robert are
appointed to enquire into his clearance and conversation and
report thereof at next meeting.
Third - Application
made on behalf of Adren (Adrian) Downy for a certificate to
Wrightown in order to proceed in marriage with Susannah Adamson.
George Lewis and William Morgan are appointed to draw
affirmation by next meeting.
Fourth - Thomas Lee
and Ellin (Ellen) Ellis declared their intention of marriage ye
first time. George Boon and John Webb are appointed to inspect
into his clearance and conversation and report therefore next
meeting.
Fifth - John Davies
being present, acknowledged that his conduct and confessions had
been dishonorable and out of the way. He expresses desire to be
more careful for the future.
Sixth - Ellis Hugh
and Robert Penrose signified some freedom to visit families for
Oley and Maiden Creek and this meeting approves of it.
Seventh - William
Robert and Isaac Price are appointed overseers of Plymouth
Meeting.
Eighth - Oley Friends
acquainted this meeting with the disorderly conduct of Benjamin
Boon notwithstanding the labor of love bestowed on him. Thomas
Ellis and Anthony Lee are desired to acquaint him that if he
continues his disorderly conduct, Friends must testify against
him.
